FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

About Weight Loss

Why do I always put weight back on?

Weight is controlled by a part of the brain called the hypothalamus that controls body regulation. When we gain weight, we get a new “fat mass set point” that the body vigorously defends. Orchid Holistic Health will guide you how to lose weight and to keep it off.

What is the holistic approach to weight loss?

Orchid Holistic Health’s approach is comprehensive, in that it is not just looking at moving more and eating less, but addressing other lifestyle factors such as sleep and stress and exploring the reasons behind weight gain.

What are the key elements to manage my weight?

We need to eat less and eat differently to achieve weight loss. Intermittent fasting and lower carbohydrate consumption is one of way of doing this. However, as the brain will recognise that you are reducing your food consumption, it will strive yo make you eat more by releasing hunger hormones. This is where the role of medications come in to suppress your appetite and reduce your food consumption. Other elements include getting good sleep and reducing your stress levels.

About Menopause Management

At what age does menopause start?

Menopause occurs anywhere between the ages of 45 and 55 years with the average being 51 in Australia. Menopause is the cessation of periods for 1 year due to the loss of our eggs in our ovaries. This causes a drop in our oestrogen levels which leads to the symptoms of menopause. However, changes can start happening 2 years before our last period (the perimenopause) and it is important to treat the symptoms at this time also.

Do I have to put up with the hot flushes and irritability?

No! There are excellent and very safe treatments to treat the distressing symptoms of the perimenopause and the menopause. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is very effective to manage this and even if your symptoms are not too bad, you can use HRT for the ongoing benefits of HRT in health ageing. There are many options that are safe and effective that can be tailored to the individual.

About Healthy Ageing

My mother has dementia, can I prevent this for myself?

Dementia has a number of causes and there are some lifestyle changes we can make to reduce our chance of getting dementia. This includes managing our cardiovascular risk factors like blood pressure, by staying active and having lots of social connections. It is important to address these factors in middle age (or before) to give ourselves the best chance to prevent dementia.

I am in my 50’s but I feel like I am older – can I do anything about this?

Yes you can! Once we are over 50 we are “inflamed”. This leads us to feeling more fatigued and getting aches and pains. But we can do something about this! By addressing lifestyle factors such as sleep, stress, eating and exercise amongst other strategies we can ache less and have more energy. We don’t have to accept all these symptoms as the natural process of ageing.
